Write Letters to Elected Officials

It helps tremendously when you write letters to your elected officials. They need to know you want a Coal Miner's Postage Stamp! When you let them know you support this effort, they will support us.

Write your State Legislators

Ask them to support a coal miner postage stamp. Give them our web page address (www.coalminerstamp.com) so they can find out more about our effort. You can write to all of them with one click. To get a list of your legislators, type in your zip code and click "GO".
When you finish writing your state legislators, you'll see a link for Federal Elected Officials -- write to them as well. Thank you!

Attached is a sample letter you can use to write to your elected officials. It can also be used in email. Please feel to change as necessary to reflect your part of the country and experiences. The more personal you make your letter, the more it will be taken seriously.

If you want to find out the amount of coal used for energy in your state, go to: http://www.balancedenergy.org and then to State Profiles at the top of the site.

Please remember to add your name, address and phone number so that they can respond to you.

The letter includes the address for the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC). You, as a citizen, can also write to them asking that they approve and issue a stamp honoring our distinguished coal miners. CSAC only accepts letters and does not accept emails.

Dear

As your constituent, I am writing to ask for your support for a Coal Miners Postage Stamp. The coal miners of this country -- men, women and children -- were the building blocks of the Industrial Revolution. Over the years, many have died in mine accidents, in addition to what is known as Black Lung, or Miners' Asthma. To this day, they are still hardworking and proud individuals.

Additionally, coal still generates at least 53% of the electricity used throughout the United States and is the cheapest energy alternative. With Clean Coal technology in place, coal has less of an environmental impact than some other forms of fuel.

The effort to get the Postal Service to issue a stamp honoring these distinguished workers began as early as 1986, but the stamp has still not been approved and issued.

If you look at the following web site, you can see the support the COALition for a Coal Miners Commemorative Postage Stamp has gained: http://www.coalminerstamp.com/ If you would like to be listed as a supporter on the web site send an email to: info@coalminerstamp.com

Please write a letter to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) asking them to approve and issue this stamp no later than 2004. Their address is:

Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee
c/o Stamp Development
U.S. Postal Service
475 L'Enfant Plaza, SW, Room 5670
Washington, D.C. 20260-2437

Thank you for your help.

Respectfully,
